Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskab

Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskab, a Norwegian shipping company founded in 1857, has operated as a vital player in the global maritime industry for over 160 years. With its headquarters based in Trondheim, Norway, the company initially focused on passenger and freight traffic with mail and goods to Hamburg, partnering with Bergenske Dampskibsselskab (BDS) to conduct traffic as far north as Hammerfest before expanding to the "England Route" between Trondhjem, Bergen, and Newcastle. From 1894, NFDS partnered with Hurtigruta, a cooperation that continues to this day. The company also held stakes in Den Norske Syd-Amerika Linje from 1913 to 1924 and entered the cruise ship market with SS Prins Olav in 1925. After re-entering the cruise sector as a partner in Royal Viking Line in 1970, NFDS exited this business segment in 1984. Prior to its acquisition by Norcem in 1984, the company invested heavily in tank, bulk, chemical shipping, and offshore operations, with close cooperation with BDS leading to the establishment of Nor-Cargo in 1979. The acquired Nordenfjeldske Shipping was subsequently bought by Kosmos in 1985, while Norcem retained control over Nordenfjeldske Offshore.
