Seaman
The Seaman is a key member of the deck crew responsible for the maintenance and conservation of the ship's decks and superstructures. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the vessel.
- Primary duties include:
- Aiding the watchkeeping team in keeping a safe lookout.
- Reporting all sightings and dangers to the bridge.
Language Requirements
The ability to speak and understand English is essential for this role.
Working Conditions
The Seaman will be required to work at sea for extended periods, often in challenging weather conditions. They must be physically fit and able to perform tasks that involve manual labor and standing for long periods.
Qualifications and Certifications
The Seaman must hold a valid STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) certificate and meet the following requirements:
- Age: 18 years or older.
- Height: 5 feet 2 inches (157 cm) or taller.
- Weight: Proportionate to height.
- Medical fitness: Must meet the medical standards for seafarers as set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
- STCW certificate: Must hold a valid STCW certificate, including Basic Safety Training (BST) and Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB).
Rank and Vessel Type
The Seaman will typically serve on a merchant vessel, such as a cargo ship or tanker, and will be under the command of a Master or Chief Officer.
