Star Line
🏢 Corporate Intelligence
Founded in 1826 by Robert Corry as the maritime arm of Belfast timber merchants James P. Corry & Co. Ltd., Star Line initially imported Canadian timber before diversifying into Calcutta trade in 1859, prompting a headquarters relocation to London. By 1908, the "Star Fleet" comprised seven modern cargo steamers—*Star of Australia*, *Star of Japan*, *Star of England*, *Star of New Zealand*, *Star of Ireland*, *Star of Scotland*, and *Star of Victoria*—aggregating 34,900 gross register tons. Operational expansion encompassed Australia and New Zealand services (1888), South America (1903), and a 1912 joint emigrant run with Royden & Tyser Lines. The entity merged into Commonwealth & Dominion Line in 1914, subsequently rebranded as Port Line in 1937, while surplus sailing tonnage was divested to the Alaska Packers' Association.
